New networking opportunities

The wibutler pro (2nd gen.) will soon be usable as a Matter bridge and will then function as a connecting element in the familiar Matter world. For selected devices, wibutler opens up new possibilities for networking and operation. Above all, these will also be available for Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings for the first time.

How a bridge works

In principle, the Matter standard only uses Ethernet, WLAN and Thread to connect devices. However, other communication standards such as EnOcean and ZigBee can be networked with the Matter world via a bridge.

A bridge brings the various standards together. The wibutler pro (2nd gen.) will also fulfil this role. The corresponding devices can then be connected to Matter.

Advantages of a bridge

With the wibutler pro (2nd gen.) as a Matter Bridge, wibutler users can utilise all the advantages of the wibutler OS as usual and at the same time use new functions, especially in the area of operation.

Energy-saving applications such as demand-led heating and individual room control or PV-2X control can be set as usual in the wibutler app. At the same time, however, selected compatible devices can be networked and operated much more extensively.

Compatible devices

In the Matter environment, there are a total of 17 different Device categories (Stand Matter 1.2). Right at the start, wibutler will support more than half of these.

All wibutler-compatible devices from the manufacturers BEGA, Eltako, JUNG, Oventrop and Viessmann, which can be assigned to one of the categories listed, will also be compatible with Matter from the first release.

This includes BEGA LED light bulbs, Eltako actuators, Oventrop room control units and Viessmann ViCare thermostats. wibutler users can then operate these devices via Matter-compatible interfaces, such as Apple Home, and network them with other Matter-compatible devices.

Supported categories:

  • Thermostats
  • Humidity values
  • Light
  • On/off switch
  • Door/window sensors
  • Motion detector
  • Shading
  • Fans
  • Brightness sensors
  • CO2 sensors
Certification process

Work on the Matter integration is already in full swing. However, when the new options will be released depends largely on the Certification dependent.

Independent institutes are responsible for certification and check whether the device fulfils Matter's specifications. Only successful certification authorises the functions to be published and advertised as compatible with Matter. It is not possible to reliably predict how much time the test laboratories will need for certification.

Technical information
  • For technical reasons, only the wibutler pro (2nd generation) will be usable as a Matter Bridge. We will prepare an exchange offer for users of a first generation wibutler pro.
  • The selection of wibutler-compatible devices that use the wibutler pro (2nd gen.) as a matter bridge will be increased over time. To this end, we are working closely with our partners in the wibutler alliance.
  • Matter compatible devices that are not wibutler compatible will not appear in the wibutler app.
  • Functional deviations may occur depending on the device type.
  • The wibutler pro (2nd gen.) will initially act exclusively as a bridge. In future, it will also be possible to use it as a matter controller. The wibutler pro (2nd gen.) will then also be able to install and control new devices.
